If you are always looking for ways to recycle here is one that you may have never thought of. Don't throw away your old tennis balls, they can "serve" many new uses. Here are just a few ways to feel the "love" from those old tennis balls: 1. Bulb Remover Use half of a ball to remove a warm light bulb from its socket. How to Safely Cut a Tennis Ball • Draw a line around the diameter or the place you want to cut. • For extra stability, secure the tennis ball in a clamp. • Wearing sturdy work gloves, pierce the ball with an X-Acto knife or a box cutter, then slide with steady pressure. (Dead balls give a bit more and are easier to cut.) 2. Comforter Fluffer Speed up the drying time of bedding by tossing a couple of tennis balls in the load. 3. Arm Weights Cut small slits into two balls. Fill with pennies or sand, then seal with tape or superglue. 4. Spa Tool Roll sore feet over tennis balls for a foot massage. 5. Jar Opener Conquer stubborn lids by using the rubber lining of a cut ball to aid your grip. 6. Makeshift Safe Cut a slit in a tennis ball, then place valuables (jewelry, cash, etc.) inside. No one will ever know.

              Accent walls can really tie a room together.  If done properly, they can balance out narrow rooms, provide a conversation piece, and add an artistic flair to an otherwise drab room.  However, there are a few do's and don'ts that must be kept in mind if you are to make the best decision regarding exactly which wall in a room should be chosen, and what the best colors are for your particular choice. If you are choosing to paint an accent wall in a narrow room, then keep some basic color theory in mind.  Warm hues like reds,yellows, and oranges will draw focus to  a wall, effectively creating the illusion of being "drawn toward" the color.  Therefore, if you were to paint the shortest wall farthest way from the entrance a bright red, then it will appear that the room isn't as narrow as it once was.  However, if you were to choose one of the longer walls, it would only serve to make the room appear even narrower than it once was. In contrast, cool hues like blues, purples, and greens can have quite a different effect.  Cool hues tend to draw one's gaze away from a wall, thereby making a room or area look larger than it really is.  These colors can serve to make short rooms appear longer, skinny rooms appear wider, and hallways appear more spacious. Next, we'll talk about natural lighting.  Warm hues work best in northern and eastern-facing rooms, as the amount of light that these are getting will be significantly less than the amount of light coming into your southern and eastern-facing rooms.  Save the cool hues for the brightest rooms. Visibility of your accent wall is another big factor to consider.  If you are painting a smaller wall, then decorate sparsely.  You don't want decorations or furniture cluttering up your accent wall and preventing it from doing its job.  Working with your architecture is also important.  If you have an irregularly-shaped wall in a room, then try if you can to make it your accent wall.

It is the time of year when we start to use the fireplace. A crackling fire is the picture of a cozy home but it can also be a home hazard. Keeping an eye on a few key items inside and out will make sure your wood-burning fireplace is safe and ready to go for the burning season.   Here is a checklist of things to look for on the outside of your fireplace:

  • A chimney cap; this keeps out rain, animals away and helps prevents hot embers from landing on the roof.
  • Bird’s nest or any type of debris buildup on the cap.
  • Tree limbs that hang above or near the chimney.
  • Crumbling and/or missing mortar and bricks.
  • A chimney that rises at least 2 feet above where it exits the roof.
  • A flue liner that is visible above the chimney crown.
  • The chimney is plumb and not leaning to one side or the other.
  • Roof flashing that is tight against the chimney.
Here is a checklist for the inside of your fireplace:
  • A flue damper that opens, closes, and seals properly.
  • Daylight can be seen through the flue, no combustible material such as animal nests or other foreign objects in the flue.
  • There are no cracked bricks or missing mortar in the fireplace surround, hearth, and firebox.
  • No moisture can be seen inside the firebox, which could mean a faulty cap.
If you spot any problems always call a licensed chimney professional or mason to remedy the problem. There is no hard and fast rule on how often to clean your fireplace but you will need to keep a keen eye to determine if it is time for a cleaning. Use your fireplace poker to scrape away some of the creosote from the fireplace lining. If the creosote buildup is is 1/8 of an inch, or more you should schedule a cleaning.
